Six months on since the world’s first multi-storey skateboarding park officially opened its doors, F51 continues to gain rightful recognition both for its design and construction and on the evening of Wednesday 28thSeptember the focus was firmly on the management of this project and the tireless efforts of one man in particular; Senior Site Manager Nigel Griffiths, rightfully shortlisted as an overall finalist for the CIOB ‘Construction Manager of the Year’ award in the Public & Leisure category.

CIOB ‘Construction Manager of the Year’ Awards 2022 – Recognition for Nigel’s delivery of F51!

Date: October 2022

Unquestionably what stands before us now in the magnitude of F51 as a truly iconic building and undeniably the most technically challenging project delivered in the longstanding history of Jenner, is enormously attributable to the exceptional project management skills of Nigel, and the manner in which he has continuously enthused and motivated his team to deliver our clients bold aspirations and brave ambition and the strong relations he has nurtured in doing so.

Selected from what was openly stated as a ‘stellar line-up of entrants’, many from Tier 1 contractors throughout the Country, and all of whom represented the very best leadership and talent and as prime examples of excellence in the built environment sector, to be shortlisted as a finalist was a huge accomplishment in itself. The silver and gold winners were announced at the glamourous gala dinner held in Park Lane London with the overall ‘Construction Manager of the Year’ selected from the winners from each category.

With ten finalists shortlisted from the public and leisure sector, making Nigel’s category the toughest contest of the entire awards, the Gold award ultimately recognised the passivhaus delivery of an Olympic standard swimming pool and leisure complex led by national contractor Kier, and who went on to win the ultimate award of the night too. Surrounded by his colleagues on the night Nigel’s true professionalism and dignity shone through as he openly stated “the competition was incredibly strong and from some big companies too! I never expected to get this far so I’m taking this as a result!”

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) awards are openly considered the most prestigious awards in construction, recognising the achievements of teams, clients and site managers from across the UK as well as rewarding those pushing the boundaries in equality and diversity throughout the industry and as such it was a huge honour for Nigel to be recognised in this manner. The Directors of Jenner are incredibly proud to call Nigel one of our own, as Managing Director Martin Sandall commented:

“Nigel’s honesty, straight-talking and pragmatic approach (possibly the most essential attributes required in delivering such a hugely challenging feat of engineering mastery) combined with his warmth and sense of fun means he is well-respected and admired by all those who have the pleasure to work with him. Described as ‘one of a kind’ by many of his colleagues and with boundless patience and positivity and the most extraordinary set of skills, possibly masked at times by his unassuming demeanour and relaxed nature, Nigel is a true credit to both Jenner and the wider construction industry through what he has achieved here, in our hometown of Folkestone.”.

Congratulations Nigel, you are certainly our winner and to once again quote the project’s led designer, Architect Guy Hollaway “If you can build this, you can build anything!” and the finished form is testimony to this and Nigel’s undeniable talent.
