We undertook Phase 1 of the Sherwood Community Project, comprising the complete refurbishment of the existing YMCA centre.
The roof of the existing single storey community centre was removed and a new first floor added by the introduction of a steel frame located externally off the building. The envelope of the first floor was clad with aluminium powder coated windows and doors, cedar cladding to a timber support structure and steel standing seam cladding to the roof.
The new first floor is accessed internally via a staircase and platform lift and externally there is a bridged access to the new front entrance together with a fire escape and staircase to the rear. Internally the new first floor level contains a multi-function space and library together with a kitchen area and WC facilities. In addition extensive refurbishment works were undertaken to the existing masonry constructed ground floor to form office and further community space.
During the early stages of the project we undertook budget estimates for the client and also had a significant involvement in a value engineering exercise to ensure the design and build contract value fell within the client’s budget.
